One of the tasks of the Research Parasitological Department is to conduct diagnostic tests for nematode, trematode, cestode, protozoan and arachnoentomosis diseases of animals. Pathological, microscopic, coprological, cultural, biochemical and chemical research methods are used.

The main areas of work of the Unit are the diagnosis of zoonotic diseases of parasitic aetiology (trichinosis, echinococcosis, cysticercosis, asparagus, fasciolosis, sarcocystosis and others). Specialists of the Unit carry out field visits to the outbreaks of trichinosis foci in order to investigate and develop plans for its elimination and prevention.

Department specialists organize expeditions to collect and study the spread of ticks in different regions of Ukraine.

On the basis of the Department a wide range of diagnostic tests of animals, intermediate hosts, biological material, blood, urine, skin, dust, soil are carried out according to the following indicators, which are included in the scope of accreditation of the State Scientific Research Institute of Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary Sanitary Expertise:

The Research Parasitological Department monitors the epizootic situation of water reservoirs by conducting tests of habitats, intermediate hosts i.e., breeding grounds for midges which cause simuliotoxicosis, to forecast their mass release. The Unit conducts monitoring studies of diseases regulated by the OIE. Makes field visits to aquaculture farms to investigate the death of fish and conduct diagnostic tests.

    Research work of the Department

    • Conducting internships for specialists of SSUFSCP’s state laboratories. Providing methodological assistance in the diagnosis of parasitic diseases. Organization and holding of All-Ukrainian and regional seminars. Development of legal documents (instructions, guidelines, posters), publication of articles in professional editorials, thematic magazines and newspapers.
    • Development of an eradication plan and monitoring programs to prevent the spread of parasitic diseases.
    • Approbation of new methods of diagnostic tests, equipment and reagents in order of their introduction in practical laboratory activities.

Research Parasitology Department is accredited as a provider of proficiency testing in accordance with DSTU EN ISO/IEC 17043: 2017. The Department organizes and conducts interlaboratory comparative tests to verify the qualification of “VET-TEST” on the above indicators.
